Follow Product Image Requirements from Amazon

As you can imagine, there is a rather specific set of Amazon image requirements for product listings set in place. Amazon makes those requirements accessible to everyone and since they change from time to time, we advise you to visit Amazon image requirements web page once every few months and make sure that you are all caught up.

Below, you can find currently applicable Amazon image requirements, which are presented in three categories: technical, size, and design. These are extremely important and you should follow them to the point in order to avoid any complications.

Technical Requirements

All product images submitted to Amazon must meet the following technical specifications:

  • Image/photo formats accepted: TIFF (.tif/.tiff), JPEG (.jpeg/.jpg), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png)
  • Image pixel dimensions of at least 1000 or larger in either height or width are preferred:

  • File names must consist of the product identifier (Amazon ASIN, 13-digit ISBN, EAN, JAN, or UPC) followed by a period and the appropriate file extension (Example: B000123456.jpg or 0237425673485.tif)

Note: Spaces, dashes, or additional characters in the filename will prevent your image from going online, thus make sure to follow the naming instructions to the point.

Amazon Product Image Size

Since image size plays an extremely important role, we decided to prepare this subsection specifically devoted to the Amazon image requirements for product image sizes. Below you can find all details related to image size and dimensions.

The image size limitations:

  • Max image file size: 10MB
  • Minimum image dimension for its longest side: 500px
  • Maximum image dimensions for its longest side: 10000px

  • Amazon recommends using images with the dimensions 2000 x 2000 pixels
  • Images should be cropped tight to the product to use the most space in the listing

Amazon Image Requirements: Design

Rules are rather strict regarding their Amazon image requirement when it comes to design. Note that there are additional, even stricter design requirements set in place for Amazon main image. Follow the guidelines below to stay on the safe side:

  • Do not include any text in your images
  • Do not include any borders in your images
  • Do not include logos in your images
  • Do not include mannequins in your images; note: If you have a mannequin, you must learn how to edit it out or employ our ghost mannequin image-editing services so our professionals can do it for you
  • Do not include watermarks in your images.

Amazon main image design guidelines:

  • The image must be a professional photo or cover art of the product being sold
  • Cover art is only acceptable in the case of digital books, files, etc.
  • The image needs to be in-focus and look professionally lit
  • The product needs to contain realistic colors and look like what you’re selling
  • The product must be the only object in the photo
  • Products should fill 85% or more of the image frame, with limited whitespace in the background
  • Backgrounds need to be pure white, which is RGB 255, 255, 255 on the color wheel
  • The full product needs to appear in the frame
  • The image must have smooth edges, as opposed to jagged edges.

Amazon alternative image design guidelines:

  • No pornographic, racist or otherwise offensive images are allowed (it goes without saying that this also applies to the main product listing photo)
  • The image must either be of or pertain to the product being sold
  • The photo needs to be in focus, professionally lit, and presenting realistic colors
  • Other products or objects are permitted, as long as they can help demonstrate the use or scale of a product
  • The product and props should take up at least 85% of the frame
  • Close-up images are allowed
  • You can have environments in the background, or show the product in use
  • Text and graphics are allowed as long as they’re useful and correspond to the product

Note: With this, we conclude the Amazon image requirement set out by the Amazon. The subsections that are about to follow, are based on industry good practice, and cover all the aspects that our Photoshop experts pay attention to when working on Amazon images for our clients.

Provide a variety of product photos

When you are selling a product online, customers cannot fell it in their hands, touch it, smell nor try it on (if applicable), as such it is extremely important to successfully replace all those senses with visual content. To achieve that you must provide a sufficient number and variety of images.

This vastly varies from certain product types to others, however, you should always include images of a product from several different angles, including some close-ups of product’s details.

Do the best you can to show the product in full. That way a customer can create that wholesome image of the product, which will make it highly more likely for him or her to complete the purchase.

Extra tip: It can give you an incredible value to visit a physical store where the product you plan on selling is sold. Take some time and observe customers’ interaction with the product. Which angles do they consider? Then apply these findings to your images.

Stick with Amazon’s standards for high-quality images

It is very important to stick to the Amazon image requirements. However, if possible satisfy the best-practice guidelines. Amazon tends to position those that have perfectly optimized images higher, which means more exposure and more sales.

Thus make sure the photo quality is high. If you do not have experience with taking high-quality photos of the products or don’t have a solid enough camera, it is a well worth investment to hire an expert photographer. This also makes editing easier and faster.

Note: If the original photo is of low quality, blurry, or otherwise compromised, there is very little that even the best Photoshop experts can do.

Follow all Amazon image requirements presented above, especially the ones regarding the image size:

  • 1:1 square image,
  • dimensions 2000 x 2000 pixels, and
  • images should be cropped tight to the product to use the most space in the listing.

Go Big Enough to Get the Zoom

If your image size is large enough, Amazon offers the zoom option. For many products, this option really enables customers to view the details properly. If you want to get that option, you need to have images the meet the minimum size standards (image zoom ability starts when the image is at least 1000 pixels on the longest side and 500 pixels on the shortest). However, in order to get the best quality zoom, we advise you to stick with the recommended size of 2000 x 2000 pixels.

Show the Product in Use

This is a super important aspect, which can drive conversions up. It really motivates people to make a purchase if they see others using the product. It helps them imagine themselves or their loved ones using that product, which further triggers the buyer’s impulse.

Moreover, if you are selling a quality product, it really comes to light when shown in use. These types of images are the ones that offer online shopping a huge advantage over traditional shopping. Here you have your potential customers’ attention and you should make them see and imagine themselves using the product with the help of good quality images.

Remember that this is not allowed for the main image but only for additional images. You must still apply all other Amazon image requirements.

Provide offer level images

Offer level images (also known as Listing Photos) are available for all used or refurbished products. This gives you additional opportunities to show your product on Amazon’s Offer listing page. This helps customers differentiate your offer.

The offer level images are added by accessing your Amazon Common Template, where you need to map the field termed as “Main Offer Image” and “Offer Image”.

Additional limitations apply for uploading the offer level images. The most important one is that an image size must not exceed 2000 x 2000 pixels.

Mind the entire frame

Before you go and edit product images, you should know a thing or two about composition and framing. You should never crop off parts of the product and you should always aim for the symmetry. Never lose sight of the entire frame. You must pay attention to the edges when editing the photo (of course, assuming that the photo was taken with the entire object in the frame).

Remember that you need to have 85% of the image covered by the product. A such you want to get your product close to the edge as possible, however, making sure you are not cropping it away.

Provide important information about the image

Using infographics is highly practical and can turn a confusing image into one that presents details of the product perfectly. Additional photo editing can be used to present various positions of a product in a single image, which is highly practical for objects with moving parts. Any warning s and limitations can also be presented with infographics.

Basically, the sky is the limit here. However, it is important to keep things clean (not cluttered), use esthetic fonts, colors that match the listing, etc.

Infographics, if done properly can do magic for conversions. At the same time, they can harm you, if done unprofessionally, as it can make your listing look super cheap. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Prohibited For Main Listing Images Only

Above, we have listed Amazon image requirements and guidelines for the main listing image, however, since it is extremely important to be in line with the rules here, we decided to list thing that is prohibited for the main listing image:

  • No drawings or illustrations of the product are allowed.
  • The image must not contain gratuitous or confusing additional objects.
  • The image must not be out of focus, poorly lit, show misleading color, or be of poor quality in any way.
  • Jewel cases, promotional stickers, and cellophane are not allowed.
  • White background must not cover more than 15% of the image.
  • No edges of the product should be cropped.
  • Backgrounds must be no other color than pure white (RGB 255,255,255).
  • The image must not contain additional text, graphics, or inset images.
  • Pornographic and offensive materials are not allowed.

For Clothing only

Amazon has certain additional rules set in place when it comes to apparel images. Below is the list that you should apply to your editing if you are working on clothing images.

  • Do not include mannequins in your images; note: if you have a mannequin, you must learn how to edit it out or employ our ghost mannequin image-editing services so our professionals can do it for you
  • Women’s & Men’s Clothing must be photographed on model or flat
  • Women’s & Men’s Accessories must be photographed flat including scarves, belts, hats, ties & cold-weather accessories
  • All Kids & Baby items should be photographed flat and not on a model
  • Images of intimate apparel, lingerie, and swimwear products may not be sexually explicit or obscene

If you do not follow the above guidelines, your images may not get published or it can cause you to lose your account.

Check Out Industry Specific Amazon Guidelines

It is best to share all of the above guidelines with your photograph before products are being photographed. If you are taking care of that part yourself, make sure to review the above info. Furthermore, before you start creating your images, you need to double-check and see if Amazon has any industry-specific guidelines for images that you’ll be posting.

The clothing industry, for example, has strict ones (as presented above) and there are other types of products that require extra precautions.

Thus, it is important to review Amazon’s details, which can be accessed via the link below.
